Walking Holidays in New Zealand

Vulcano Ngauruhoe - Tongariro NP

New Zealand Walking & Tramping Holidays

Renowned for its vast stretches of untamed landscape – and now also for being the location of the Lord of the Rings films - New Zealand is a paradise for anyone who loves the great outdoors. For British travellers on a walking holiday, New Zealand has a familiar feel yet with some exciting differences, which make the long journey here well worthwhile.

North and South Islands straddle a range of longitudes which creates contrasting habitats. North Island – centre for Maori traditions – is home to boiling volcanic mud pools, the other-worldly lands of Tongariro and the rainforests of Waiotapu. The Tongariro Crossing is said to be the country’s best one-day walk, following a path across barren volcanic landscapes and up to emerald-green crater lakes. South Island is cooler and more mountainous with wonderful walking areas (or tramping as the locals call it) including the Abel Tasman, Kepler, Mount Cook and Routeburn Track.
